Generative Engine Optimization

When your buyer asks an AI, does your name come up?

They no longer scroll through ten blue links. They ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI, get one answer naming two or three companies, and act on it. We make sure yours is one of them.

BlackCarrot is a Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) agency based in London, UK. We make small and mid-size business websites citable by AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Claude and Microsoft Copilot — through AI crawler access, answer-first content, entity and schema work, off-site citations and monthly citation monitoring. GEO audits start at GBP 390, in English, German and Arabic.

The short answer

What is Generative Engine Optimization?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making a website citable by AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Copilot. Unlike SEO, which competes for a ranked link, GEO competes to be the source the AI quotes inside its answer — where the user often never sees a results page at all.

In practice it means four things: letting the AI crawlers in, writing pages an engine can lift a clean answer from, making your entity unmistakable in machine-readable form, and being mentioned on the sites those engines already trust. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the same discipline under a different name.

AI answer engines citing sources — Generative Engine Optimization by Blackcarrot Tech

The answer is the new front page.

Named in it, or absent from the decision.

The shift

Ranking first no longer means being found.

An AI answer names two or three companies and the decision is made. There is no page two. You are quoted, or you are not in the conversation. Three measured numbers, not opinions:

68%

of Google searches end without a click

US desktop and mobile searches, January to April 2026. The searcher gets what they came for on the results page itself and never reaches a website.

15% → 8%

click-through halves under an AI summary

When an AI summary appears, the share of searches that lead to a click on any result falls from 15% to 8% — and links inside the summary itself are clicked around 1% of the time.

82%

of B2B tech queries now trigger an AI Overview

Up from 36% a year earlier. In B2B, the AI answer is no longer the exception on the page — it is the page.

GEO vs SEO

GEO is not SEO with a new name.

Both matter, and they share technical ground. They are not the same job, and they are not won the same way.

Classic SEO

Competing for a position in a list of links.

  • 1 Goal: rank a link on page one
  • 2 Winner: position 1–3 takes the clicks
  • 3 Measured by: rankings, clicks, impressions
  • 4 Content shape: long, keyword-led
  • 5 Technical lever: Googlebot, Core Web Vitals
  • 6 Language: one strong site can serve several

GEO

Competing to be the source quoted inside the answer.

  • 1 Goal: be the cited source in the answer
  • 2 Winner: cited or invisible — there is no second place
  • 3 Measured by: citation share across engines
  • 4 Content shape: answer-first, entity-clear, sourced
  • 5 Technical lever: GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, llms.txt
  • 6 Language: won separately in every language

What we do

Six workstreams, one outcome.

Nothing here is theory. Every one of these was run on our own sites before it was sold to anyone.

🔐

01 · AI crawler access

robots.txt, llms.txt, rendering. If GPTBot is blocked or the crawler finds only JavaScript, nothing else on this list matters. This is where most sites silently fail — including sites that believe they allow AI crawlers.

02 · Answer-shaped content

Key pages rebuilt so an engine can lift a clean answer: the question as the heading, the answer in the first paragraph, numbers with a named source and a date.

🏷

03 · Entity & schema

Organization, Service, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList. The engines have to know who you are, what you sell and where you operate, in machine-readable form that agrees with your visible text.

🔗

04 · Off-site citations

The part almost nobody does. Engines quote what other sites say about you — directories, industry pages, comparison posts, forums. We build that surface deliberately instead of hoping for it.

🌎

05 · Multilingual GEO

An English page never wins a German or an Arabic answer. Every language gets its own page, its own keyword set and its own schema — see how we build multilingual sites.

📈

06 · Citation monitoring

Monthly measurement across engines: where you are quoted, where your competitor is quoted instead, and which gap is worth closing next. Reported as it is, including the months nothing moved.

Four doors

Four indexes. Four different doors.

Most agencies optimize for Google and call the site AI-ready. Google's index only feeds Google's own answers. The other engines pull from somewhere else entirely — and each door has to be opened separately.

Bing index

ChatGPT Search

Sources largely from the Bing index. One free Bing Webmaster Tools registration opens the door — and most SMBs have never done it.

Bing index

Microsoft Copilot

The same Bing index, so the same single move covers both. Copilot sits inside Windows and Office, in front of exactly the buyers SMBs sell to.

Own index

Perplexity

Runs its own index and its own crawler, PerplexityBot. Being fine in Google says nothing about being visible here.

Brave index

Claude

Searches through the Brave index — a door almost nobody works, which is exactly why it is still cheap to win.

Google index

Google AI Overviews

Google's own index, but gated separately by the Google-Extended permission. Ranking well is necessary and not sufficient.

Google index

Gemini

Google's index again — the permission is set once and covers both. What differs is which passage gets lifted into the answer.

Step 2

Technical unlock

Crawler permissions, llms.txt, schema, rendering, sitemap. Usually the fastest win on the list and often the one that has been quietly blocking everything else.

Step 3

Content rebuild

Key pages rebuilt answer-first, in every language you actually sell in, with sources and dates an engine can trust and repeat.

Step 4

Monitor & expand

Monthly citation measurement, new answer pages for the questions that keep coming up, and off-site citation building where the engines already look.

Frequently asked questions

GEO — your questions, answered

The questions business owners actually ask us about being cited by AI.

What is generative engine optimization? +
What is the difference between GEO and SEO? +
SEO wins a position in a list of links. GEO wins a mention inside a generated answer. SEO is measured in rankings, clicks and impressions; GEO is measured in citation share across engines. They share technical ground — clean HTML, schema, speed — but the shape of the content and the scoreboard are different.
How do I get my website cited by ChatGPT? +
Four things, in order. Let OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot crawl you in robots.txt. Serve real HTML text rather than JavaScript-only content. Answer the question in the first paragraph, under a heading that matches how people ask it. Then earn mentions on sites the engine already trusts, because ChatGPT also quotes what others say about you.
How do I optimize for Google AI Overviews? +
Keep Google-Extended allowed, mark the page up with Organization, Service and FAQPage schema, and put the answer directly under a question-shaped heading. AI Overviews still lean on the classic Google index, so ranking work is not wasted — but the passage Google lifts has to be short, factual and able to stand on its own.
Does GEO replace SEO? +
No. Google's AI answers are still built on Google's index, so pages that rank well are the ones most often quoted. GEO adds a second layer on top: crawler permissions, answer-shaped passages, entity clarity and off-site mentions. Anyone selling GEO as a replacement for SEO is selling you the same work twice.
How long does GEO take to work? +
Technical changes — crawler access, schema, llms.txt — are picked up within days to a few weeks. Content and citation work is slower: expect the first measurable movement in citation share after roughly two to three months, and meaningful ground after six. We report what changed, not what we hoped would change.
Can you do GEO in German and Arabic? +
Yes, and it has to be done separately. An English page does not win a German or an Arabic answer: the engines answer in the language of the question, from sources in that language. Each market gets its own page, its own keyword set and its own schema — not a translated copy of the English one.
How do you measure GEO results? +
We ask each engine the questions your buyers actually ask, on a fixed schedule, and record who gets named: you, your competitors, or nobody. That produces a citation share per engine over time, alongside referral traffic from AI sources in analytics. Where something cannot be measured honestly, we say so instead of estimating.
